The polls already show how the people are leaning towards the SNP more and more, and now we’re leading the polls and hopefully, we’ll get the current government re-elected. On May 5th, I’ll be going to the nearest polling place and my vote will go for the SNP, and I encourage you to do the same thing, if you’re lucky enough to live here and are able to vote. Let’s keep Salmond’s government in Holyrood, which has been doing an outstanding for the country. Let’s do the right thing — for Scotland!

Meeting Alex Salmond

I approached Salmond when he was leaving a meeting and headed back to his car, and nearly missed him. When I called his name, he promptly turned around and greeted me right away! I was surprised of how approachable he was, and I can’t emphasize how friendly he was as well. I was wearing a trucker hat with a banjo image on it, and as he came closer, he stared at it in curiosity. Much to my surprise, I had read that he liked country music, a lot, and that was obviously a curiosity to me, as my accent was to him. I was impressed of his knowledge of country music. There was a camera crew around, who were covering his visit, and part of the conversation got caught on tape, lucky for me.

The woman in the video is a good friend of mine, and a heck of a nice lady. Her name is Gail Ross and she recently won the local elections for the SNP, which I’m very proud of! She’s also a Macdonald, as you can hear her proudly say it to Mr. Salmond. In case you are not familiar with Scottish clans, the Clan Donald is one of the largest clans in Scotland and the world, with several branches and representatives around the world, along with hundreds of thousands of people who descent from the same.

He shared with me the story of one of the many astronauts with Scottish Ancestry, whose middle name is Macdonald. He brought a Scottish saltire and a miniature of Robert Burns with him to space, in order to honor his Scottish ancestry. Scottish Americans were pioneers in space flight, a good example, among many others, is Neil Armstrong.

He also shared the well-know story of Johnny Cash’s Scottish roots, which is a very special story. Johnny Cash met a man on a plane who was from Fife, who told him that streets in his hometown still bore the old Cash name. Inspired by the chance meeting on the plane, Cash visited a genealogist and discovered that he was of Scottish descent and that his clan had originated around the 12th century in the Strathmiglo area of Fife. The connection was traced back to when the niece of Malcolm IV (1153-1165) — who was named Cash or Cashel — married the Earl of Fife. The first American Cash connection came in 1612 when mariner William Cash sailed from Scotland to Salem, Massachusetts, with a boatload of pilgrims. I’d like to share that my most recent ancestor on my dad’s side, Helen Macdonald Houston, was actually born in Fife as well. Needless to say, I’m a huge Cash fan as well, and learned just recently that he was Scottish as well. I always thought he was of Native American descent, and apparently, so did the man in black himself!

Anyways, it was an enormous pleasure, and a great honor for me to meet Alex Salmond. He is quite a remarkable man, a very honest politician, a great First Minister and I will be more than happy that I will participate in the upcoming historical elections, vote for the SNP and be part of history in its making. Be part of better, join the SNP!
