500 Scottish criminals are suing for damages because they were banned from voting whilst serving prison sentences and and the woman who died from a heart attack while a nearby ambulance technician chose to stay on his tea break. 33-year old Mandy Mathieson was struck down by a heart attack, caused by a blood clot, at her home in Tomintoul in the Highlands. In other news, a new £70 million fund has been launched to boost Scotland’s position in the offshore wind industry and a man has been charged in connection with the death of a father of two on Halloween and the Shetland Islands have made it into the top ten tourism destinations in the world. Travel guide Lonely Planet says Lerwick is a ‘must visit’.

The Scottish economy has slipped back into recession. Figures released today show Scottish Gross Domestic Product fell by point one per cent in the first three months of this year. In other news: The remains of an RAF pilot have been recovered from the site of a crash involving two Tornado aircraft in the Moray Firth. An outbreak of Legionnaire’s disease in Edinburgh in which three people died has been declared over by health officials. The Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency has disrupted the activities of more serious organised crime groups than ever before. Forecasters are still warning of localised flooding as heavy rain continues to cause disruption across much of central Scotland. And in sports: St Johnstone have jetted to Turkey for tomorrow night’s Europa League tie with Eskeeshirspor. The SPL say they won’t be issuing Dunfermline with a full written explanation as to why Dundee were invited to join the league. Six Scottish golfers will be in the field when the 141st Open Championship gets underway at Royal Lytham tomorrow.

Old Photos with ‘Bothy Ballad’ from Past Farming Days, Scotland’s North East

Photo montage of the old style of Scottish farming. These are family photos from our own collection taken in the counties of Fife & Angus and spanning probably about the half century from the earlyish 1900′s to the mid 1950′s. In the later photos, I personally remember some of the animals and events (such as repairing the haystacks after the great gale of (?) 1957). I also recognise & knew many of the people from the later era photos, who are mostly close relatives . In this era, the horse was king (or queen!) and provided the energy to power most of our important agricultural processes. Even in these few fading photographs, the strong bond of mutual affection and respect between man and beast will be immediately obvious…. The bothy ballad comes from Aberdeenshire, a bit to the north of where the photos belong, but I don’t believe the way of farming life in those days would differ much.
